A friend of mine was sexually assaulted out to dinner with a professor. When she told her story to her adviser, a dear friend of ours, she told him she wore a turtleneck and long pants and described her outfit. He cut her off and told her, “I don’t care if you were wearing a fucking bikini—nobody has the right to touch you.”

I think that was the first time in the whole process of talking to cops and administrators about what happened where someone actually told her it wasn’t her fault.

They make it about the clothes, the situation—“Why did you agree to dinner? Why didn’t you take your own car? Did you lead him on? For once, someone made it about her and her rights. I think this helped her most of all in the process. Everyone needs to respond like this to survivors, in my opinion.

I’m so sorry about your friend, OP. Props to her advisor (and you!) for being supportive and understanding what rape culture means—and saying “fuck this shit, NOBODY HAS THE RIGHT TO TOUCH YOU.”

The desexualization of women of size, especially those of color, has been a part of American media for a long time. Her body is supposed to represent motherhood, but not sexual femininity, as if those things were not connected. Her size is a sign of her authority, so she is thought to be “masculine.” Though she holds authority, she is not to be seen as competition of the delicate white female. Her bosom is a place to rest not to caress. Her “excess” weight is supposedly an indication of her intelligence, adding a factor of ableism and sanism in the mix.

Curvy WoC are reclaming there bodies. They see neither thinness nor thickness as the definition of femininity or intellgence. Their bodies are rebelion against mainstream white culture. They embrace motherhood without questioning the existence of their sexuality.

Also I just wanna add that that first image is of a racist as fuck cartoon that was printed in US newspapers after the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. That woman is supposed to be Queen Lili’uokalani. It was circulating when she was in Washington protesting on behalf of the Hawaiian people.

Edit: Also, they obviously racialized her as black because the US went back and forth between portraying Hawaiians as black (Mark Twain called us the n-word a lot) and portraying us as native, depending on what they were trying to accomplish. In this case, they racialized her as black to imply that she was “unfit to rule” (because of her alleged blackness, they also tried pulling some shit a bit earlier where they said that Kalakaua’s dad was black to try to lessen support for him but Hawaiians were like “whatever”). When Hawaiians were racialized as native it was to say their blood was “easily mixed” with white folks and we could be conditioned to be good citizens, but they also were like “but Hawaiians aren’t vengeful like them mainland natives and they totally respect property p.s. come vacation here they want to serve you, aloha~*~”

Also, not sure if this whole edit is derailing but here is another example of using anti-blackness to delegitimatize the Kingdom of Hawai’i. It’s just hard for me to resist talkin’ about Hawai’i. But this one is just anti-blackness but not about desexualizing women of size, it’s more about sexualizing women of color.

I have a friend named Kaitlan: she’s beautiful and kind and is a great cosplayer, and she’s been getting these slipped under her apartment door for months.

I asked her if I could make this post because I’ve been seeing this happening and I just want something to be done. Whether it’s people supporting her or someone telling her how to get this to stop. How to get these people to get the punishment they deserve.

She has literally done anything that she knows to do. She even went to the police:

They told her to come back if it got more serious. What does that even MEAN? Apparently, someone has to actually kill themselves for this to be serious to the police.

Apparently, this behavior is acceptable at Indiana University of PA. Apparently, this behavior is acceptable to the Indiana County Police. Apparently, bullying like this is completely acceptable until someone ends up dead.

I’m just absolutely infuriated right now. This should not go unpunished. Absolutely fucking not.

I’m e-mailing the university. This is too much and it has to stop.
